Make a scene from a map image

Turn any battle map image into a scene with a grid that fits.

A scene is a map you can play on, with a grid that lines up with the map. You build one from an image file.

Add the map image

A map is an image file, such as a PNG, JPG or WebP. Atlas saves a copy of it in your vault and adds it to the open collection.

  1. Open the Asset Manager and check that your collection is open.

  2. Click the + button at the top right and choose Add Map. The Create maps window opens.

  3. Drop your map images anywhere in the window, or click Drop images anywhere to choose files.

Drop a map image into the Create maps window.
  4. Check the name under each map. Click it to change it.

  5. Click Create. Your maps now show on the Maps tab.

Create the scene

  1. On the Maps tab, double-click the map. The New scene window opens.

  2. Check the Scene Name. Atlas fills in the name of the map.

  3. Click Create scene.

The scene opens and the Asset Manager closes. Later you find the scene on the Scenes tab.

Check the grid

The first time a scene opens, Atlas looks for a grid in the map image. When it finds one, it puts its own grid on top, lined up with the lines of the map. It finds square grids and both kinds of hex grid.

When the map has no grid, Atlas hides its grid. You can still show it and line it up by hand.

Line up the grid by hand

If the grid does not match the map, show Atlas where the lines of the map are.

  1. Press Space to open the command palette. Click Grid settings.

  2. For a hex map, set Grid type to Hex (Pointy) or Hex (Flat) first.

  3. Click Enter Alignment Mode. The Grid Alignment panel opens on the Intersections tab.

  4. Follow the hint in the panel. On a square grid, click a place where grid lines cross, then the next crossing to the right. On a hex grid, click a hex corner, then the next corner along the same edge. Do this in each of the four areas of the map.

Click grid crossings in the four areas of the map.
  5. Check the preview and click Apply.

To run auto-detect again, place a grid on a map without grid lines, or change how the grid looks, see Line up the grid.
