Move and copy between collections

Move or copy scenes, maps, encounters and characters to another collection, and sort them into folders.

A scene, map, encounter or character can go to another collection by a move or a copy, and it takes the files it needs along. A collection holds the scenes, maps, tokens and encounters of one campaign or adventure.

Move or copy to another collection

A move takes the item out of its collection. A copy leaves the original where it is and makes a new item in the other collection.

  1. Open the Asset Manager. Press A on the map, or click Asset Manager on the dashboard.

  2. Select the items. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) and click to add single items. Hold Shift and click to select a range.

  3. Right-click one of the selected items. Choose Move to Collection or Copy to Collection, then the collection.

Move to Collection and Copy to Collection in the right-click menu.

When it is done, a message tells you what moved or what was copied.

What comes along

Atlas takes along the files the item needs:

  • A scene takes its scene file, its preview image and its snapshots.
  • A character takes its token image.
  • Map images, notes and statblocks inside the old collection's folder go to the new collection too. On a move, a file stays where it is if something in the old collection still uses it.
  • Tags on the items come along.

A scene that joins a collection follows the rules of that collection: its tokens lose conditions the new collection does not have, and the widgets of the old collection stay behind.

Linked scenes

A note pin can open another scene, and such a link works only inside one collection.

If the items you move or copy link to other scenes, Atlas asks what to do:

  • Move with 2 linked scenes takes the linked scenes along and keeps the links. The button shows how many scenes there are.
  • Move without links removes the links.

For a copy, the buttons say Copy in place of Move.

The Linked scenes dialog.

A character can link to a statblock note from Fantasy Statblocks, and a move keeps that link.

A copy gets its own token image. If the statblock note is inside the old collection's folder, Atlas copies the note too and links the copy to it.

If the note is somewhere else in your vault, it stays linked to the original character. The message then says that the copy arrived without its statblock. To link one, right-click the copy and choose Link Statblock. See Use Fantasy Statblocks with Atlas.

Sort items into folders

Each tab of the Asset Manager has its own folders.

  1. Click New folder in the header of the Asset Manager. You can also right-click an empty area and choose New Folder.

  2. Type a name and click Create folder.

  3. Drag items onto the folder. Or right-click the items, choose Move to Folder, pick the folder and click Move.

    Drag characters onto a folder.

To empty a folder, right-click it and choose Move Contents to Root.

Change files in Obsidian

Atlas keeps its files in the atlas-vtt folder of your vault. Each collection has a folder in atlas-vtt/collections, with the same name as the collection, and the folders you make in the Asset Manager are real folders there.

You can rename and move these files in Obsidian's file explorer. Atlas follows the change and keeps your scenes working. If you delete a file, its item leaves the Asset Manager.

To move content to another collection, still use Move to Collection in the Asset Manager. It takes along what the content needs and handles linked scenes.
