Atlas Online questions
Answers to what people ask most about Atlas Online, the closed beta and playing with a group over the internet.
These come up most on the Atlas Discord. For problems with Atlas itself, see FAQ and troubleshooting.
Getting in
How do I get into the closed beta?
Sign-ups for the waitlist closed on October 12th. Invite keys go out by email in waves, to people drawn at random from the list. If you signed up, look in your spam folder too. More waves are announced on Discord.
Atlas says "Online play is in early access"
Your account has no invite key yet. Open your account page, type the key under Invite key and click Redeem. A beta key only works for an account with Discord linked.
I cannot find online play in Atlas
Update Atlas in Obsidian's Community plugins settings. Then press Space, open Experimental features and turn on Online play. The globe button shows at the bottom left of a map. Online play needs Obsidian 1.11.4 or newer.
Your players
Do my players need Obsidian or an account?
No. They need a web browser and your invite link. Only you, the GM, need an account and Obsidian.
Can players join from a phone or tablet?
Yes. The table works in the browser of a phone or tablet as well as on a computer. On a phone, Install app… in the More menu puts the table on the home screen.
How many players can join?
A table has up to 12 seats.
A player comes back as a stranger
A player who comes back types their personal code in place of the join code. A browser in private or incognito mode forgets the table when it closes, so the code is the way back. If they lost it, open their menu in the online panel and click Copy code. See Players and their tokens.
A player cannot move their token
Players move only the tokens you give them. Select the token, click Assign in the online panel and choose the player. See Give a player their character.
Where are my players' notes and items kept?
In your vault, in the folder of the campaign. They sync with your vault like your other files.
Hosting
Can I host from a phone or tablet?
No. You host from Atlas in Obsidian on a desktop computer with Windows, macOS or Linux.
Does my computer have to stay on?
Yes. Keep Obsidian open while you play, because your players get the map and the tokens from your Atlas. You do not need to open ports on your router.
What do my players see?
The scene you show to the player view, with your fog and without hidden tokens. Your notes, hidden tokens and secret doors never leave your computer.
Can I use the player view on a screen at home too?
While your online players see a scene, the local player view stays closed. To open it anyway, press Space and click Show Current Map in Local Player Window.
The table keeps reconnecting
A VPN or iCloud Private Relay can block the connection. Players then see "This network blocks the table. Try another, or turn off VPN or Private Relay." Try without the VPN, or on another network.
Can I host on my own server or my home network?
No. Tables run through the Atlas Online server.
