Widgets

Track numbers, progress clocks and countdowns on the map, in one scene or in every scene of a collection.

A widget is a small card at the top right of the map. There are three kinds:

  • Counter: a number you count up and down, like Fear, Hope or a danger level.
  • Clock: a circle cut into segments that you fill, like a progress clock.
  • Timer: a countdown, like a torch that burns out or a time limit.

Add a widget

  1. Press Space to open the command palette. Click Widget settings.

  2. Click the plus button (Add widget) next to Widgets.

Widget Settings with two widgets and the Add widget button.
  3. Choose Counter, Clock or Timer.

  4. Type a name. Click the colour swatch to pick a colour, and choose an icon.

  5. For a clock, choose the number of Segments. Turn off Show count to hide how many segments are filled.

  6. Click Add widget.

Use a widget on the map

Count a counter up, fill a clock segment and start a timer.
  • Counter: click + or −. Click the number to type a new one, then press Enter.
  • Clock: click + to fill a segment and − to clear one. Click a segment to fill the clock up to it.
  • Timer: click the play button to start and pause it. Click the reset button to start over. A new timer runs for 5 minutes. While it is paused, click the time to type a new one, like 10:00.

With the keyboard

The first five widget cards show a number from 1 to 5. Hold that number key to select the widget. While you hold it:

  • Press + or - to count a counter or clock up or down.
  • Press Space to start or pause a timer.
  • Press R to reset a timer.

One scene or every scene

A widget can show in one scene or in every scene of its collection. A collection holds the scenes, maps, tokens and encounters of one campaign or adventure.

Turn on Show in every scene for things the whole campaign tracks, like a torch or a doom counter. Every scene of the collection then shows the widget with the same value: count it up in one scene and it goes up everywhere.

Leave it off for things one fight or one place tracks. The widget then shows only in the scenes where you switch it on, and each scene keeps its own value.

Set it when you add the widget, or later with the globe button in the widget list (Show in every scene or Show only where switched on).

Widget settings lists every widget of the collection in each of its scenes. The line under the name tells you where it shows, for example "every scene" or "off here".

The widget list: one widget in every scene, one switched off here.

Some game system presets add a widget to every scene: Shadowdark adds a one-hour Torch timer. See Game system presets.

Switch a widget off in one scene

In the widget list, click the map pin button (Switch off in this scene). Click the button again (Switch on in this scene) to bring the widget back.

This works for widgets that show in every scene too: the widget leaves this scene and stays in the others.

To hide all widgets of this scene at once, turn off Show all widgets.

Show widgets to players

Each widget has a people button in the list: Hide from players or Show to players. New widgets show to players.

The player view shows widgets while Show widgets is on in Local player view settings. Only you can start, pause or reset a timer. See Show the map to your players.

Edit or delete a widget

Click the pencil button (Edit name and icon) to change the name, colour or icon, or where the widget shows. The bin button (Delete from every scene) deletes the widget.
