Save and spawn encounters

Save a group of tokens as an encounter and place the whole group again in any scene.

An encounter is a saved group of tokens, for example a goblin ambush or a guard post. You save the group once and put it on a map again with one double-click. It belongs to a collection, like your maps and tokens.

Save tokens from the map

Set the tokens up before you save, for example hide the monsters of an ambush or lower the HP of a wounded guard. The encounter keeps where the tokens stand from each other, and their name, HP, conditions, size, ring color and whether they are hidden.

  1. Select the tokens. Hold Shift and click them, or drag a box around them.

  2. Right-click one of the selected tokens and click Save as Encounter.

  3. The Save as encounter window shows a picture of the group and a list of its tokens. Type a name.

Name the encounter in the Save as encounter window.
  4. Click Save encounter, or press Enter.

Select a group of tokens and save it as an encounter.

Atlas saves the encounter in the collection of the open scene.

Save tokens from the Asset Manager

You can also build an encounter from token cards, without placing them first.

  1. Press A to open the Asset Manager and open the Characters tab.

  2. Select several token cards. Tick the box in their corner, or hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) and click them.

  3. Right-click one of them and click Save 3 Tokens as Encounter. The number is how many you selected.

  4. Type a name and click Save encounter.

Atlas saves the encounter in the collection that is open in the Asset Manager. These tokens have no places yet, so they stand in a square block when you spawn the encounter.

Spawn an encounter

  1. Open the scene where the encounter happens.

  2. Press A to open the Asset Manager and open the Encounters tab.

Saved encounters on the Encounters tab.
  3. Double-click the encounter, or right-click it and click Spawn Encounter.

Double-click an encounter to place its tokens.

The tokens appear in the middle of your view, on the grid, in the same formation as when you saved them. They are selected, so you can drag the whole group to the right place.

If the picture of a token is gone from your vault, Atlas skips that token and tells you how many it placed.

Manage encounters

Right-click an encounter on the Encounters tab to rename it (Rename Encounter), put it in a folder (Move to Folder) or give it tags (Tags). Delete removes the encounter, and the tokens already on your maps stay.

You can also move or copy an encounter to another collection. See Move and copy between collections.

Place many copies of one token

For a group of the same creature, you do not need an encounter.

  • Right-click a token card on the Characters tab and open Spawn Multiple. Choose how many, from 2 to 10.
  • Or point at a token card and type a number, for example 1 then 2 for 12. The card shows the number with − and + buttons. Double-click the card to place that many. The limit is 99.
Type a number over a token card, then double-click to place that many.

Copies of one token get small numbers on the map, so you can tell them apart. To turn the numbers off, press Space to open the command palette. Click Token settings and turn off Show instance badges.
