The Atlas Licence
Version 1.0 of 2026-11-01. Copyright © 2025-2026 Fabian Urbanek.
Purpose
Atlas exists to give the tabletop community a virtual tabletop that is open source, hackable and free to use. A sheet of paper has no say in what you draw on it, who you sell the drawing to, or whether you mention the paper. Atlas takes the same position: what you make with it is yours, and what it makes for you is free for anyone to use, for any purpose, with no fee, revenue limit, paid plan or credit line. Where this licence can be read in more than one way, read it in the way that serves this purpose.
1. Definitions
“We” and “us” mean Fabian Urbanek, the maintainer of Atlas VTT. “You” means anyone using Atlas or anything made with it.
“Atlas” means the Atlas VTT plugin for Obsidian, in any released version.
“Atlas Code” means the source code of Atlas and the artwork and sounds bundled with it, as far as they are not Third-Party Material.
“Your Content” means what you or others bring to Atlas or make by your own choices: images, tokens, notes, statblocks, tables, audio, text, and the way you arrange them in a scene.
“Generated Content” means what Atlas produces when you use it, in any format. This includes maps, floors and scenes made by the dungeon generator; the walls, doors, lights, pins and notes created with them; generated names and text; scene files; thumbnails and other images Atlas renders; and grids, walls and other data Atlas detects or imports for you. It does not include material you put in, even after Atlas has converted, cropped or tiled it.
“Starter Material” means built-in statblock templates, game system presets, conditions, senses, light presets, dice sets and similar data that Atlas offers or copies into your library, as far as they are not Third-Party Material.
“Collection” means any set of scenes, maps, tokens, encounters, statblocks, templates, tables, notes or other data made with Atlas or in its file formats, in any form.
“Third-Party Material” means anything by other authors, including everything listed in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
2. Your Content
We claim no ownership of Your Content and take no licence to it. The exception is content you post on atlas-vtt.dev or use through Atlas Online, for which we have only the rights the Terms of Use give us to provide that service.
3. Generated Content
3.1 Dedication. To the extent we hold copyright or related rights in Generated Content, we dedicate them to the public domain under the CC0 1.0 Universal dedication.
3.2 Contributors. Where such rights belong to contributors to Atlas and reach us through the Atlas Contributor License Agreement, we grant you the same freedom as a licence, on the terms of section 3 of CC0.
3.3 What this allows. Without asking, paying, notifying or crediting anyone, you may use Generated Content for any purpose. You may run paid games with it, print it, change it, and publish or sell it as it is or as part of something else: books, PDFs, adventures, map packs, games, merchandise, commissioned work, and content for other virtual tabletops or any other software.
3.4 No exclusivity. Everyone holds these rights in the same Generated Content. Selling it gives neither you nor your buyer a right to stop others from using it. What you add yourself is Your Content.
4. Starter Material
Section 3 applies to Starter Material in the same way.
5. Collections
5.1 Selling and sharing. You may give a Collection away or sell it at any price, in any shop or none, under any licence you choose. No royalty, approval, listing or credit is owed to us.
5.2 No copyleft through the format. A Collection is not a work based on Atlas Code merely because it uses Atlas’s file formats, was made with Atlas or runs in Atlas. A Collection that contains copies of Atlas Code is subject to the AGPL for those copies.
5.3 No lock-in. You may convert a Collection for any other software. Anyone may write software that reads or writes Atlas’s file formats, free or paid, without a licence from us. Code copied from Atlas Code to do so stays under the AGPL.
6. Showing Atlas
As far as our rights go, you may take screenshots of Atlas in use and stream, record and publish it, commercially and without credit.
7. Atlas Code
Atlas Code is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 only. The code of releases up to and including 0.1.6 stays under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0.
Additional permission under GNU AGPL version 3 section 7: Generated Content and Starter Material may be conveyed, on their own or as part of any other work, on the terms of Sections 3 and 4 and free of the AGPL, even where they contain material copied from Atlas Code.
8. Third-Party Material
Third-Party Material stays under its own licence, including any credit that licence requires. This licence grants no rights in it.
9. The Atlas name
This licence grants no rights in the names Atlas VTT and Atlas Online or in the Atlas logo. You may say truthfully that your work was made with Atlas VTT, is for it or works with it. Do not suggest that we made, approved or support your work. Any other use of the names, the logo or the compatibility badge is governed by the Brand and extension policy.
10. Online services
This licence grants no rights in Atlas Online, its table server and player page, Atlas accounts or the Armarium, which have their own terms. Those terms do not reduce your rights under Sections 2 to 6, and a service ending or an account closing does not affect them.
11. Duration
11.1 No conditions. Your rights under Sections 2 to 6 depend on no fee, subscription, account, plan, revenue or company size, and they do not end when you stop using Atlas.
11.2 Past work. This licence covers everything made with any version of Atlas, including versions released before it was published.
11.3 Later versions. A later version of this licence cannot take back what an earlier version gave for anything already generated or made.
12. Responsibility and liability
You are responsible for what you make, publish and sell, and for holding the rights to everything you put in it.
Atlas, Generated Content and Starter Material come as they are, without warranty of any kind, as far as the law allows. This includes any warranty that they are free of the rights of others, fit for a purpose or free of errors.
We are liable without limit for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and under the German Product Liability Act. We are not otherwise liable for slight negligence.
13. Interpretation
This licence only adds permissions. It takes away none that the AGPL or CC0 give you. For Atlas Code the AGPL prevails, and for the dedication CC0 prevails.
If part of this licence cannot be enforced, the rest stands, and the unenforceable part applies as far as the law allows.
German law applies to this licence. If you are a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of the laws there that cannot be set aside by contract.
